Brad turned forty.

We dropped off Jemima at his parents’, took a taxi to the airport and flew to Tasmania. We hired a car in Hobart and drove ninety minutes up the east coast to a house on a headland overlooking Great Oyster Bay. We couldn’t really afford this trip, but we couldn’t afford not to take it either.

For three days we read, talked, ate, drank, laughed and held one another. We remembered why we were together.

An architect known for his modernist compositions had designed the place. It was all steel and glass. We could see the trail the convicts used two hundred years ago to trudge up from the beach below, and where, for thousands of years before European arrival, the Aboriginal Oyster Bay people harvested shellfish. From almost every angle we could see the horizon, imagining Antarctica just beyond it. We were awed by the soft light and the stillness of the bush, how the surroundings felt prehistoric, how we half-expected a long-extinct creature to slowly pad its way around the headland, making giant prints in the sand.

For three nights I slept. There was a dreamlessness. I thought, wrongly, that a healing had been reached.
